<idAbs>

The catchment and catchment routing data in NHDv2.1 products are utilized to understand flow to the Chesapeake Bay and to assess water quality impacts to the Bay. The areas of land captured in the catchments representing the watershed are outdated due to man-made storm drains and pumping practices. Additionally, the catchments used to represent the Chesapeake Bay Watershed vary depending on how the catchments were selected. This layer ensures consistent representation of the watershed. The modified Chesapeake Bay Watershed boundary is equivalent to the boundary of the modified catchments.

</idAbs>
<idPurp>The modified 1:100k Catchments for the Chesapeake Bay Watershed layer is an updated National Hydrography Dataset Plus (NHDPlus) v2.1 catchment layer which incorporates storm drain information in Chesapeake City, Virginia to better reflect flow to the Chesapeake Bay and contains only catchments that contain some flow to the Chesapeake Bay. The authoritative layer contains 83,628 catchments, covering a 170,470.97 square kilometer area. </idPurp>

All catchments in the NHD routing information having a diversion fraction (DIVFRAC) greater than 0 within or draining to a catchment in the watershed were included in the final layer. The routing data includes an attribute called RPU (Raster Processing Unit), which denotes the watershed. The initial “routing detected” catchments were the catchments with an RPU value of 02a, the code for the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. There is one case of a catchment with a 0% diversion fraction value that is included due to information from the Permit Administrator for Public Works Stormwater Management Regulatory for Virginia Beach.</stepDesc>

<stepDesc>Alter catchments in Chesapeake City, VA to reflect stormwater drainage provided by the city's Public Works Department.
Chesapeake City’s Public Works Department provided 4 Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) results for 4 sub-watersheds: New Mill Creek 1 & 2, Bells Mill Creek, Oak Grove, and Indian River. SWMM data for Bells Mill Creek was provided and incorporated into the authoritative layer by editing the existing catchments based on the drainage lines provided by the city, including catchments 10054282, 10054638, 10055062, and 10055252. Additionally, New Mill Creek 1 & 2 was incorporated by editing catchment 10054140. The portions of Oak Grove and Indian River not already within the catchments were small and not edited into the authoritative layer.
The vector modelling units for each sub-watershed were assigned the FEATUREID of the catchment they drain to. These polygons were rasterized on the assigned FEATUREID at 30-meter resolution and snapped to the native 30-meter resolution NHDv2.1 catchment raster. The results were mosaicked to new raster with the 30-meter raster version of the catchments to ensure no gaps or slivers in the final dataset. The mosaicked raster is the 30-meter GeoTIFF version of the catchment layer. The mosaicked raster was vectorized (with multi-part polygons) to produce the final vector dataset.</stepDesc>

The vector catchments geometries were dissolved into a multi-part polygon. This edit is a line feature that was manually drawn between the points nearest the bay boundary (Fisherman Island, VA and North Virginia Beach, VA).</stepDesc>

<overview>
<eaover>The vector catchment data us a shapefile that includes 4 attributes:
1. GRIDCODE - arbitrary unique value per catchment.
2. FEATUREID - unique catchment ID, equivalent to native NHDPlusv2.1 products, including catchments and flowlines.
3. AreaSqKM - area of polygon in units of Square Kilometers.
4. Geometry - field containing the polygon geometries.
The raster catchment layer is a 30-meter resolution GeoTIFF where the pixel value is equivalent to the FEATUREID.
The vector Chesapeake Bay Watershed Boundary is a shapefile representing the boundary of the watershed and is equivalent to the dissolved vector catchment layer that is edited to include the Chesapeake Bay.</eaover>
