<idAbs>This Chesapeake Bay Program Watershed Model Phase 6 River Segment data set is an ArcGIS shapefile depicting river segments in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and adjacent areas in Maryland and Delaware. The River Segments for the Chesapeake Bay watershed part of the
model domain are largely based on the USGS Chesapeake Bay SPARROW model river reach segmentation (Preston and Brakebill 1999). A decision rule established during the Phase 5.3 Model development was to simulate river reaches with discharges of 100 cubic feet per second (cfs) or greater. The areas of drainage to those simulated river reaches were the river-segments. Exceptions were made to the 100-cfs cutoff rule for some river reaches that had useful monitoring data but were less than 100 cfs, which were included as river-segments in some cases. For the portions of the Phase 5.3 model domain outside the Chesapeake watershed the SPARROW Model was unavailable and so a 1:500,000-scale river reach network was used. Thirty-meter-resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data derived from digitized USGS maps were used to delineate watersheds for each river-segment. State watershed boundaries replaced the DEM-derived watersheds where both data were coincident. There were a few changes made in the Phase 6 River Segments.
1. The boundary lines of those River Segments that made up the Chesapeake Bay basin boundary were replaced with the basin boundary derived from the USGS WBD boundaries.
2. The only portions of the model domain outside of the Chesapeake Bay basn that were retained were those in Maryland and Delaware.
3. At the request of MDE and ICPRB, eight River Segments that contained reservoirs were subdivided to delineate the areas draining into those reservoirs.</idAbs>

<purpose>The U.S. Geological Survey, Chesapeake Bay Program, Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin, Maryland Department of the Environment, Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, and the University of Maryland are collaborating on the Chesapeake Bay Regional Watershed Model, using Hydrological Simulation Program - FORTRAN to simulate streamflow and concentrations and loads of nutrients and sediment. In order to establish a framework for model simulation, digital spatial datasets were created defining the discretization of the model region (including the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, as well parts of counties outside the watershed that are partly within the watershed) into land segments, a stream-reach network, and associated watersheds.
The Land Segments are intersected with the River Segments to create the Land-River segments that are the geographic entities used by the Chesapeake Bay Regional Watershed Model.
